About CROSSING TEXT

CROSSING TEXT is an international collaborative theatre project initiated by Theatre Company shelf (Japan) and Lab Teater Ciputat (Indonesia).

Since 2020, the two companies have explored a method of collaborative creation that allows texts, bodies, histories, and cultures to intersect through research, workshops, artistic residencies, and collective performance-making. The first phase culminated in the premiere of The Smiling Old Women (2023), a collaborative production inspired by literary works by Yukio Mishima (Japan) and Danarto (Indonesia).

The second project, Warisan Bunga Hitam (The Legacy of the Black Flower), was developed from Sebelum Bunga Hitam (Before the Black Flower), a solo performance by Indonesian actor and director Sir Ilham Jambak. The original work was freely inspired by W.S. Rendra's Indonesian translation of Shakespeare's Macbeth. Rather than adapting Shakespeare's play, this new collaboration examines the contemporary relationships between the body, power, violence, history, and memory from both Japanese and Indonesian perspectives.

Within CROSSING TEXT, actors are understood not simply as performers executing a director's vision, but as "living texts" carrying their own bodies, languages, cultures, and personal histories. Creation emerges through dialogue, close reading, physical improvisation, historical research, and mutual critique. Cultural differences, linguistic gaps, and even misunderstandings are embraced as productive forces within the creative process.

For us, CROSSING TEXT is not about cultural fusion. It is a methodology that allows differences to remain intact while generating new theatrical expressions through encounter, friction, and dialogue.

In Warisan Bunga Hitam, the performance explores bodies disciplined by power, memories shaped by violence, and individuals living within history. Macbeth appears not as a single character, but as a condition that can emerge within anyone—less a proper name than a quality, embodying the ambitions, fears, and conflicts that exist within us all.

Through an ongoing dialogue between two cultures, while allowing each to retain its own identity, the project explores how theatre can become a space for rethinking history, trauma, and our relationships with others.
